At Viewport.ai, we develop intelligent software for the process industry. Our software excels in making vast amounts of technical data understandable.

OCR Optimization

A crucial feature of our software is its ability to recognize text in scanned documents and technical drawings. These scans do not contain textual information in a traditional sense, requiring optical character recognition (OCR) to extract text from the scans.

Despite significant advancements in technology, OCR is not flawless! Comparing different OCR solutions (and configurations) is vital for achieving optimal results. Preliminary research indicates that there is no standard approach for testing OCR effectiveness. We aim to develop this testing framework and, if it does not involve disclosing customer data, make it available as an open-source project.

OCR Testing Framework Development

The testing framework is to be developed in .NET / C# to allow integration into our existing continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipeline. Your role is crucial in designing, developing, and optimizing this framework to compare various OCR solutions effectively.

What You Will Be Doing

- Designing and developing a testing framework in .NET / C#.

- Implementing and testing various OCR solutions and configurations within the framework.

- Evaluating OCR solutions based on accuracy, efficiency, and integration capabilities.

- Contributing to the integration of the testing framework into our CI/CD pipeline.

Requirements

- A proactive and investigative mindset.

- Experience in development with .NET / C#.

- Interest in OCR technology and its applications in processing technical data.

- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

The software is delivered as product or as a service (SaaS) to their process industry customer in Water, Power, Oil and Gas and chemical sectors worldwide. Customers include Engie, WML, Total, Wintershall, BASF, and Spirit Energy.

The Viewport.ai software detects cross links between documents, drawings and data from various sources using techniques as OCR, image processing, and fuzzy matching. These cross links offers end users an unprecedented unified view of the available information and assists them in maintaining consistency across multiple domains.

What students are we looking for?

We are looking for graduated bright engineers with a broad interest and an entrepreneurial spirit. We believe that software should solve real-world problems for our customers, and should be easy to use. Having customer focus with an agile mindset is therefore a must. Development is done primarily in C#, JavaScript and SQL. For the adventurous type we may have projects abroad, e.g. UK, Norway, UAE, Singapore, and Australia.
