Background 
ReumaNederland is the Dutch health and patient organization for people with rheumatic diseases, celebrating its 100 birthday this year. It is our goal to realize better quality of life for those living with rheumatic disease, and, ultimately, making these disease reversible. 
This is achieved through (funding) research into better treatments, developing reliable information, and draw attention to the interests of people with rheumatism. 
ReumaNederland stimulates research in which collaboration with experts and companies is an important component. Different perspectives and the pooling of knowledge are necessary to be able to effectively solve the problems for people with rheumatism. 

To achieve our goals, ReumaNederland invests, amongst others, in scientific talent to strengthen the quality and impact of rheumatology research in the Netherlands. This is done through the Talent Programme, in which researchers are supported at various stages of their scientific careers. The Junior Talent Programme is intended for researchers that 
recently obtained their PhD and who wish to build a scientific career in the rheumatology field. The Junior Talent Call was first launched in 2022/2023 and ReumaNederland now wants to evaluate the effects of this call. 

Goal of the internship 
To conduct an evaluation of the Junior Talent Call, focusing on the initial effects of the programme. The results serve as input for decision-making regarding a potential follow-up call in 2027. 
The student gets the chance to contribute directly to the strategic decision-making of a leading Dutch health, and patient, organization. The evaluation influences the future support of young scientific talent within Dutch rheumatology research and offers ample opportunity to gain experience with policy evaluation, stakeholder interviews, and impact 
analysis. 

Research questions to address 
The student will be given the opportunity to further refine research questions in collaboration with ReumaNederland. Potential questions include: 

Process evaluation 
• Does the current structure of the Junior Talent Call align with ReumaNederland's 
objectives? 
• How do applicants, laureates, supervisors, and assessors experience the program? 

Impact evaluation 
• To what extent does the Junior Talent Call contribute to the scientific career 
development of young researchers? 
• What initial scientific and societal outcomes are visible? 
• How the call contributed to retaining talent within Dutch rheumatology research? 
Future 
• What adjustments could increase the impact of future calls? 
• How could the Junior Talent Call be structured in the future to achieve maximum 
effects? 

Research methods to be used 
The student will be given the opportunity to develop a methodology most fitting to address the identified research questions. Envisioned methodoly includes a combination of: 
• document analysis; 
• interviews with researchers, supervisors, key opinion leaders, scientific societies, 
ReumaNederland staff, etc.; 
• questionnaires among applicants and other stakeholders; 
• analysis of career development of laureates; 
• comparison with similar talent programs of other health funds; 
• drafting a Theory of Change or evaluation framework. 

Expected results 
The internship will result in: 
• an evaluation report; 
• an overview of success factors and areas for improvement; 
• concrete recommendations for the organization of a potential Junior Talent Call in 2027.
